GREENWOOD – Fourth-ranked Brebeuf toppled fierce competition June 10 at Hickory Stick Golf Course, posting a score of 284 to upset No. 2 Avon for the Center Grove Regional crown and advance to the state finals.
Avon, which held down the No. 1 ranking for most of the season, finished six strokes behind Brebeuf at 290. Unranked Martinsville, meanwhile, upset No. 12 Warren Central, No. 16 Zionsville, and No. 14 host Center Grove for the third berth to The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin for the June 15-16 finals.
In the Martinsville Sectional June 7, the host Artesians surprised Avon by one stroke. But the Orioles were short-handed that day, playing without standout junior Patrick Rodgers because of a U.S. Open qualifying match.
“We were actually hoping we could win a sectional championship, so it was not a surprise to us since Avon’s No. 1 player wasn’t there,” said Martinsville coach Steve Richardson. “In practice rounds, we started shooting lower and our scores kept getting better.”
Teams and individuals both faced tough competition at Hickory Stick to qualify for state. All three individual qualifiers shot under par.
Monrovia sophomore Rylan Porter, Brebeuf junior Jacob Gould, and Rodgers were all tied for the lowest score of the tournament after 18 holes with 69s. Rodgers captured medalist honors after winning a one-hole tiebreaker.
“I got off to a little shaky start, but I just really tried to stay patient,” said Rodgers, the defending state runner-up. “I hit the ball really well out there and tried to put myself in great positions off the tee.”
Porter advanced to the individual state championship with his 69, joining Roncalli junior Andrew Fogg and Zionsville senior Graham Singer after they both qualified with 70s.
