GT Carmel Inv.: #3 Munster ekes out one-point win over #2 host ’Hounds

Third-ranked Munster made the trip from “The Region” to suburban Indianapolis worth it April 25 as the Mustangs defeated No. 2 host Carmel in the annual Carmel Invitational by one point, 67-66.
No. 7 Jasper finished third in the loaded eight-team tourney with 41 team points, while 13th-ranked Homestead (32) placed fourth, sixth-ranked Brebeuf (30) finished fifth, and No. 20 Evansville Memorial (20) went home sixth.
The girls tennis setback was surprising for the host Greyhounds, who were off to a 4-0 start in dual meets this season. That impressive stretch included back-to-back 4-1 victories April 17-18 over Brebeuf and then-No. 4 Center Grove.
“The team score calculations had Munster winning by one,” said Carmel coach Sharon Rosenburgh. “However, Carmel had three champions out of five and beat Munster in three positions.
“In the point system used in this tournament, this was enough to give the team score to Munster.”
Indeed. Carmel did take titles at No. 3 singles (junior Susie Chen) as well as at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles (senior Megan Renninger and sophomore Olivia Trancik, juniors Sarah Rodefeld and Annika Carlson). While Munster won at No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles, the Mustangs managed a pair of runner-up finishes compared with none for Carmel.
The two singles champions for Munster were senior Mary Hill, a 6-0, 6-1 finals winner over Jasper senior Janel Seng, and junior Christina Lee, a similarly easy 6-1, 6-0 finals victor against Homestead freshman Macy Johnson.
Hill, the third-place finisher at last year’s state finals, defeated defending runner-up sophomore Courtney Wild of Carmel 6-3, 6-0 in the semis at No. 1. Wild, meanwhile, had beaten defending state quarterfinalist senior Jade Johnson of Homestead 7-5, 7-6(4) in the opening round.
