BB: 4A Carmel’s 3-pointer at :07.3 stuns 3A Brebeuf, 38-37

CARMEL – On a wacky night that saw visiting Brebeuf shoot 30 percent and get seven shots blocked in the first half yet still lead 19-17 at the break, it stands to reason that host Carmel would roar back on 26-percent shooting in the second half and get a last-second 3-pointer to win.

Right?

Well, that’s how it happened Feb. 26 in both teams’ regular-season finale. The host Greyhounds (15-5) went a stretch of 9:12 in the first half without scoring, going 0 for 9 from the field and watching the Braves (12-8) go on a 14-0 run.

But a 9-0 run of their own negated a 10-point Brebeuf lead, and this nip-tuck affair wasn’t decided until senior guard John-Michael Polley drilled a three from the top of the key at :07.3 for a 38-37 victory.

Was this rematch – the much-closer follow-up to Carmel’s 74-39 win of a year ago – between the state’s 10th-rated Class 4A school (Carmel) in the power ratings and Indiana’s No. 9-rated 3A school (Brebeuf) underwhelming statistically? Yes. Exciting?

Remarkably so.

Just one more night of “Hoosier Hysteria.”
