FB 3A SECT. 21: #1 Chatard makes mistake-prone #8 Brebeuf pay, 21-7

INDIANAPOLIS – Class 3A top-ranked Indianapolis Chatard took advantage of two disastrous decisions by No. 8 host Brebeuf late in the first half of the Sectional 21 championship Nov. 6, turning the miscues into 11 quick points and going on to deny the Braves their first-ever sectional title with a 21-7 victory.

A halfback pass and 45-yard field goal in the final 45 seconds of the second quarter buoyed the nine-time state champion Trojans (11-1) to a 14-0 halftime ahead. From there, it was a steady dose of defense and senior running back Ari Pappas (36 carries, 132 yards) as Chatard advanced to a regional date at No. 7 Batesville next weekend. 

“We took care of the football, and that was really key to the game,” coach Vince Lorenzano, now 85-14 in his seventh season at Chatard, told his team after the game. “Strive to improve – tackle better, block better, execute better.”

They did a bunch of that on this night, which was surprisingly devoid of rain and relatively warm for an early November evening. The Trojans committed zero turnovers while collecting three from Brebeuf (10-2), all on interceptions of sophomore quarterback Aloyis Gray (9 of 25

For 81 yards passing, 15 carries for 63 rushing yards).

Combining that opportunistic pass “D” with quality containment of standout senior RB Evan Kroot (20 carries, 71 yards) on the ground, and it made little difference that the Trojans were actually outgained 235-221 on the night.

This game hinged on the late second-quarter dive by Brebeuf.
